A team of researchers from Tel Aviv University has created a robot capable of identifying individual odors 10,000 times more effective than all previously created similar devices.

We are talking about a cyborg - a robot with a set of antennas that were borrowed from the desert locust. The electronic system measures the magnitude of the signal from the antennas when the insect detects a source of odor. Scientists have combined a cyborg locust with an algorithm that identifies an odor from its output.

The result was a system that perfectly distinguished eight "pure" odors of certain plants and two mixed odors. In the future, such a robot, for example, will help in the detection of drugs or explosives.
